Trump Pulls Plug on Idaho Wind Project
President Trump’s executive order imposing a temporary moratorium on wind energy development in federal coastal waters also includes a provision pulling a federal agency’s approval for a controversial Idaho windmill project. The moratorium will stand until “a comprehensive assessment and review of federal wind leasing and permitting practices” is completed. The directive calls for the Bureau of Land Management’s June Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) approval of the proposed Lava Ridge wind project to be suspended until the Department of the Interior conducts “a new, comprehensive analysis of the various interests implicated … and the potential environmental impacts” of the project. Magic Valley Energy’s proposed 4,500-acre project, with 241 turbines that are 660-feet tall, would generate enough power for 500,000 homes but is vociferously opposed by an overwhelming majority of residents who live in the surrounding seven counties. During Interior Secretary nominee Doug Burgum’s Jan. 16 nomination hearing before the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, Sen. James Risch (R-Idaho) hinted that Trump would target the project in an executive action. “We hate windmills. We don’t want windmills,” Risch said, teasing the Lava Ridge project “only has about 95 hours left on the table. [It was] a 99-to-1 issue and we’re so happy to see it gone.” Trump has displayed a visceral dislike for windmills, especially offshore windmills. He reminded all of that while addressing inaugural attendees at Capital Arena. “We're not going to do the wind thing. Wind, big, ugly windmills. They ruin your neighborhood. If you have a house that's near a windmill. Guess what? Your house is worth less than half,” he said.
